Love Explained

Love defines a manner in how we relate to God and one another. 1 Cor 13:4-7 defines love as follows.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

The scripture above does not define a loving person but how to love. For example, a person waiting patiently in the grocery line is not necessarily loving; but, a person waiting patiently on God for changed circumstances or a person patiently dealing with that unruly family member is acting in love. A loving person must be a person of character though - that is, a patient person is more likely to act in loving patience than an impatient person. In fact, all God's commands are given to teach us how to love Him and others.

Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."[Mt 22:36-40]

Love has the benefit of existing for all eternity as well. Love is an experience that we will always get to enjoy. We experience lots of things that will be done away with. For example, when we see God, there is no need for faith. When we are redeemed, there is no need for hope. But, love will never leave us.

Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away... But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.[1 Cor 13:8,13]

But you might ask "Why should I love other people? It does me no good. What is my foundation to love other people? No one seems to love me." The foundation has been given by God. God loves you. He laid down His life for you. With this knowledge and relationship, you can love God and others.

We love, because He first loved us.[1 John 4:19]

This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.[John 15:12-13]
